Why it matters
Your irrigation system is a network of pipes lying in dirt, dosed with lawn chemicals, connected to the same line that fills your kitchen glass. The backflow preventer is the one-way gate that keeps it that way, and it's a mechanical device with springs and rubber seats that wear. That's why most water utilities require an annual test by a certified tester, with the report filed — it's one of the few pieces of home maintenance that's actually the law.
Your freeze climate adds a wrinkle: the backflow device (often a pressure vacuum breaker standing above ground) is the most freeze-vulnerable part of the whole irrigation system. Spring testing conveniently catches winter's cracked internals — a split PVB fails the test loudly.
What skipping it costs

Skip the test and the first cost is bureaucratic: utilities that require annual tests send escalating notices, then fines, then in stubborn cases a water shutoff — hundreds of dollars to avoid a $100 appointment. The reason the law exists is uglier: a pressure drop in the street can siphon whatever's sitting in your irrigation lines — fertilizer, pet waste, pesticide residue — backward into your drinking water.
Two ways to get it done

You'll need: Your eyes — the test itself requires a certified tester.
The test itself isn't a DIY — certified gauge kit, certified person, filed paperwork. Your part takes ten minutes a year:
- Know your device: usually a brass assembly a foot above grade near where the irrigation tees off, or in a ground box. Photograph its data plate for your house file.
- Eyeball it each spring: green corrosion at the joints, water weeping from the vents, or a winter crack in the bonnet — flag it to the tester.
- Book the test in April, before the watering season leans on the system. Many irrigation companies bundle it with the spring startup visit — one truck roll, two boxes checked.
- Keep the report. Utilities lose paperwork; you shouldn't. It also reads well in a resale binder.
Hire it out

A residential backflow test runs $75–$150 and takes about twenty minutes — gauge kit on the test cocks, numbers recorded, report filed. If it fails, the fix is usually a rebuild kit (seats, springs, poppets) for well under the cost of a new device; the numbers on the failed test tell an honest tech exactly which check gave up.
The scheduling trap: some utilities contract "reminder" companies whose letters look like bills and whose preferred-vendor pricing runs high. You may use any certified tester — shop the price like any other trade visit.
Ask the tech
- Are you certified for backflow testing in this state, and do you file the report with the water utility or do I?
- If it fails, what failed — and is it a rebuild kit or a replacement? Show me the test numbers.
- Can you put me on your list for the same month next year?
Red flags you're being upsold
- A replacement quote without test numbers. Most failures are a $30–$60 rebuild kit — seats and springs — not a new $300 device.
- Test prices over $200 for a single residential device. This is a 20-minute visit with a gauge kit.
- Anyone testing who can't name their certification. Utilities only accept reports from certified testers — an uncertified 'test' is money burned twice.
