Why it matters
If you don't charge a car at home, close this card — it's not for you, and there's nothing to buy.
Still here? Then know what makes EV charging different: duration. A dryer runs 40 minutes; your car pulls comparable current for six hours, night after night. Continuous load finds weak points nothing else in your house will — bargain receptacles, loose terminations, breakers that were marginal from day one.
What skipping it costs

An EV pulls near-max current for hours at a time — the most demanding thing most residential outlets ever do. A bargain-grade 14-50 receptacle under that load slowly cooks its own contacts; melted plugs and garage fires follow. The failure costs four figures minimum; the honest fix is a $60 part.
Two ways to get it done
Do it yourself
You'll need: The back of your hand, after a charge session.
- After a full charge session, unplug (if you use a plug-in charger) and feel the plug and receptacle face with the back of your hand. Warm is a warning; hot is a stop-everything.
- Look at the plug blades — any discoloration or pitting means the receptacle's grip is failing. That's the $60-part moment; don't ride it out.
- Check cord strain: the cable should hang from a hook, not dangle its weight off the plug. Ten dollars of cable management protects a $600 charger.
- Confirm the ratings match: breaker amps × 0.8 = the maximum your charger should be set to draw. A 50-amp breaker means a 40-amp charge setting.
- Charging off a standard 120V outlet (level 1)? That's fine and safe on a healthy dedicated outlet — same warm-plug check applies, and skip anything with an extension cord in the chain.

An electrician's once-over on an existing charging circuit runs $150–$325: torque the terminations, verify the receptacle grade, check the breaker, and bless (or fix) the amp settings. If your setup was a previous owner's weekend project, this visit is where "unpermitted" becomes "known good."
The honest upgrade path, in order of cost: better receptacle ($60 part), hardwiring the charger (eliminates the plug entirely — the best fix for heavy daily charging), then and only then panel work if the load calc genuinely fails. Anyone who starts at the panel is selling from the wrong end of the list.
Ask the tech
- Is this receptacle rated for continuous EV load, or is it a $12 range outlet doing an EV's job?
- What's the breaker size, and what's the charger's amp setting? (The charger should draw 80% of the breaker, max.)
- Was this circuit permitted? If not, what would it take to make it right?
Red flags you're being upsold
- 'You need a new panel' with no load calculation shown. EV circuits fit fine in many existing panels once someone does the math.
- An 'industrial-grade receptacle' upcharge in the hundreds — the good one (Hubbell-class) is about $60 retail.
- Hardwire conversions priced like new circuit runs when the wire's already in the wall.
Second opinion time: Any panel-replacement quote over $3,000 that started as a charger question — get the load calc on paper first.
