Why it matters

Extension cords are for Saturday projects, not infrastructure. Every cord that's been in place more than a month is an outlet your house is missing — and November is when the stakes rise, because space heaters, holiday lights, and block heaters all show up at once. In your climate the space-heater weeks are coming no matter what, so this audit is really heater-season prep: the cords you find now are the ones that would've been carrying 12 amps through February.

The failure mode is simple: undersized cord + sustained load + no airflow (under a rug, behind a couch) = heat. Cords fail quietly right up until they don't.

What skipping it costs

A 16-gauge cord under a rug feeding a 1,500-watt space heater is a heating element you didn't know you installed. Cord fires cluster in exactly the weeks this task is scheduled — the fix costs less than one insurance deductible.

You'll need: Replacement outdoor-rated cords where needed (~$15–$30 each).

  1. Walk the house and collect every extension cord and power strip into daylight. Garage and home office included — that's where the daisy chains live.
  2. Retire on sight: cords with cracked jackets, loose plugs, warm spots, or lamp-wire-thin gauge feeding anything that makes heat.
  3. Rules to enforce as you re-place what survives: space heaters plug into the wall, never a cord or strip. Nothing under rugs or pinched by furniture. One strip per outlet — never strip-into-strip.
  4. Outside: outdoor-rated (look for "W" on the jacket) or it doesn't go outside. Ordinary indoor cords in wet weather are how GFCIs earn their keep.
  5. Anything that's been plugged in for a year is a vote for a new outlet. Write the list — that's your electrician scope.

Adding a circuit or a well-placed outlet runs $200–$450 for straightforward access, more if walls are closed and finishes are fancy. It's honest work with an honest payoff: the cord disappears forever.

Where this goes wrong is escalation. You call about one outlet; the visit ends with a quote to rewire the house. New circuits added to an old panel are routine — a full rewire needs evidence (deteriorated insulation, aluminum terminations, repeated tripping) you can see, not vibes.

Ask the tech

  • Can you add an outlet where I keep using a cord instead? What would that circuit run?
  • Is the circuit I'm loading actually near capacity, or does it just need an outlet in a better spot?
  • Are the outlets I rely on 15-amp or 20-amp?

Red flags you're being upsold

  • One overloaded power strip becomes a whole-house rewire pitch. Adding one circuit is a $200–$450 job, and it's usually all you need.
  • 'Your panel can't handle modern life' without a load calculation on paper. Demand the math.
  • Fear-selling surge strips as fire protection — a power strip protects electronics, not against overloads.

Second opinion time: Any panel-upgrade quote over $2,500 that started with 'you use too many extension cords.'
