Why it matters
You have gutter guards, which means someone — maybe you, maybe the last owner — bought a reduction and was probably sold an elimination. Here's the honest ledger: good guards keep whole leaves out of the trough, which is real; they do nothing about what lands ON them. Maple seeds wedge in mesh, pine needles thatch across surface-tension helmets, and shingle grit silts through everything. The chore changes from scooping the inside to brushing the outside — smaller, faster, still a chore.
Winter adds the guard-specific failure: ice forming on clogged guard tops builds a dam faster than open gutters would, because the melt can't reach the trough at all.

The failure mode of gutter guards is the owner who believes the sales pitch: tops mat over with seeds and shingle grit, valleys pile up, and the system overflows exactly like naked gutters — except now nobody's looked in five years because the guards 'handled it.' Overflow at the foundation is the same $8,000 story whether or not there's mesh on top.
Two ways to get it done
Do it yourself
You'll need: Ladder, Stiff brush or broom, Hose.
Once a year (do it with the roof-inspection card — same ladder setup):
- Brush the tops. A stiff broom along each run clears the mat. Watch what comes off — heavy grit means your shingles are aging (worth noting), heavy seeds mean spring is your cleaning season, not fall.
- The hose test, which is the whole truth: run water onto the guarded gutter. It should pass through promptly and exit the downspout strong. Water sheeting over the front edge = the guard is blinded; slow downspout = debris got in anyway (it does, at the seams and ends).
- Check the valleys and corners — guards fail at transitions first. Roof valleys concentrate debris onto one short section that clogs while the rest stays clean.
- Look under one section every few years if flow is slow: fine debris that sifted through builds a sludge layer guards can't prevent — that section needs the guard popped and a scoop.
Hire it out

A guard-top brush and flush runs $100–$250 — meaningfully cheaper than a full unguarded cleaning, which is the honest financial case for guards. If sections need the guards removed and reset, expect more; get the debris map so next year you pay for the three sections that load up instead of the whole house.
And keep the warranty paperwork from the original install honest: if a "lifetime no-clog" guarantee only survives through paid annual inspections, price those inspections against just... paying for cleaning. Sometimes the warranty costs more than the chore it insures.
Ask the tech
- Are you brushing the guard tops and flushing the downspouts, or does 'guard cleaning' mean removing and reinstalling the guards?
- Which sections actually collect debris on this house? I want the map, not the flat rate.
Red flags you're being upsold
- 'Never clean your gutters again' — the sentence that sold the guards is the sentence to forget. Guards change the chore; nothing eliminates it.
- A lifetime no-clog warranty whose fine print requires their annual paid 'maintenance inspection' to stay valid. That's a subscription wearing a warranty costume.
- Replacement pitches for working guards: micro-mesh salesmen love to condemn every other style on sight. If your sections flow in a hose test, they work.
Second opinion time: Any full guard-replacement quote over $1,500 when the existing guards pass a hose test.
