Why it matters
Natural gas comes with a built-in alarm — that rotten-egg smell is mercaptan, added on purpose because raw gas is odorless. The system works if you know your part: what to do the moment you smell it, and where your shutoff lives.
October timing is deliberate: the furnace is about to run for the first time in months, and first-fire week is when marginal connections announce themselves.

You'll need: A 12-inch adjustable wrench (to stage near the meter, not to practice with).
This is a knowledge task — the only wrench involved is the one you stage, not swing:
- Find the meter shutoff. Outside at the meter, a rectangular valve tang on the pipe before the meter. A quarter-turn with a wrench (so it crosses the pipe) is OFF. Hang or zip-tie a wrench nearby — the day you need it isn't the day to find one.
- Learn the one-way rule. You may turn gas OFF. You do not turn it back on — that's the utility's or a plumber's job, because everything downstream needs checking and pilots need relighting. Utility response to gas calls is free, fast, and judgment-free.
- Run the smell drill with the household: smell gas → don't flip switches, don't unplug anything, don't start the car in the garage → everyone walks out → call the utility's emergency line from outside. Sixty seconds, once a year, everyone participates.
- Walk your appliance connections. Look for kinked or corroded flexible connectors and anything an installer left resting on sharp sheet metal. Look, don't wrench — hand-tightening gas fittings "to be safe" causes leaks.
- Faint occasional whiff near the range that comes and goes? Pilot or igniter quirks are common — but persistent smell anywhere is the drill, every time.

Red flags you're being upsold
- A 'leak' found by sniffer alone, priced at thousands. A real diagnosis includes a pressure test — the whole system holds pressure or it doesn't.
- Whole-house repipe quotes from one aging appliance connector — connectors replace for $25 in parts.
- Pressure to replace the meter assembly — that's the utility's equipment, and their work is free.
Second opinion time: Any gas-line repair quote over $1,500, before anyone touches anything. Pressure tests are cheap and objective.
