Why it matters
Your sump pump is the appliance version of a smoke detector: it does nothing 360 days a year, and then one night it's the only thing standing between your basement and the water table. Pumps and their float switches fail quietly — no noise, no warning light — which is why the only honest answer to "does it work?" is a live test.
One more failure mode where you live: with ~60–120 freeze days a year, the discharge line outside can freeze solid at exactly the wrong moment. A frozen discharge means the pump runs, moves nothing, overheats, and dies during the melt — check that the line drains and isn't lying flat where ice can dam it.

A sump pump fails silently — it just sits there, fine, until the first big storm asks it to work and it doesn't. A finished basement under two inches of water is a $10,000–$15,000 insurance story, and the pump that would have prevented it was a $20 bucket test away from being caught.
Two ways to get it done
Do it yourself
You'll need: A 5-gallon bucket, Flashlight.
- Open the pit lid and look: the pump should be upright, the pit reasonably clean (no gravel, silt piles, or a stray toy jamming the float), and the float able to move freely.
- Pour in a bucket of water — enough to raise the float. The pump should kick on within a couple seconds, drain the pit fast, and shut itself off without chattering.
- Go outside and confirm water actually exited the discharge, at least 6 feet from the foundation, flowing away — not straight back down the wall to make the round trip again.
- If you have a battery backup: unplug the main pump and repeat the test on battery. A backup that's never been tested on battery is a hope, not a system. Check the battery date — they're good for 3–5 years.
- Pump runs but nothing moves, or it won't shut off? Check the check valve (the fitting in the discharge pipe) and the float — those two parts cause most "dead pump" calls and both are cheap.

A plumber's sump service visit runs $125–$250: they'll test the pump under load, check the float and check valve, and give you an honest read on remaining life. Worth folding into any other plumbing visit rather than paying a standalone trip charge.
Replacement realities so nobody can spin you: a quality 1/3–1/2 HP pump installed runs $400–$700. Battery backup systems, $600–$1,200 installed. Water-powered backups (no battery to die, needs municipal pressure) are the sleeper pick. When a sump visit turns into a $12,000 interior-drain-tile pitch, slow everything down and get a second opinion — sometimes it's real, but it's a diagnosis that deserves two voices.
Ask the tech
- How many gallons per hour is this pump rated for, and is that right for this pit?
- How old is the pump, and what's the float switch condition? (Float switches die before motors do.)
- Where does the discharge line terminate, and is it far enough from the foundation?
Red flags you're being upsold
- A new pump pitched the moment they see an old one — a 10-year-old pump that passes the bucket test is a working pump. Age alone isn't a diagnosis.
- Battery-backup systems quoted over $1,500 installed. Real systems run $600–$1,200 including the battery; above that you're funding someone's margin, not your protection.
- 'You need a bigger pump' without a measured inflow reason. Oversized pumps short-cycle and die younger.

DIY the bucket test twice a year, no excuses — it's pouring water in a hole. Hire the replacement when it fails, and seriously consider the battery backup: pumps die during storms, and storms take the power out.
